“Goals, Content and Sequencing" Chapter 5

INTRODUCTION Creating a curriculum should be a very detailed process in which many elements must be taken into account. “The aim of this part of the curriculum design process is to make a list of the items to teach in the order in which they will be taught.”. Language curriculum design / I.S.P. Nation and John Macalister. The focal purpose of this essay is to provide a reaction about the most important aspects, contents and needs when designing a curriculum. There are some guidelines and ideas the biographer mentions on the book and different contents which will be considered and developed in the next chapter by way of a reaction essay. THEORETICAL FRAMEWORK Teachers cannot plan a class without considering three aspects: Environment, needs and principles. It is necessary to retake the principles in order to organize specific ideas of a curriculum design. Setting the goals and the contents is the first thing we have to think about, the better the content, the faster the learning. “Units of analysis should be one of the starting points of curriculum design”. Language curriculum design / I.S.P. Nation and John Macalister. There are some units of progression the author mentions; it can be used to evaluate different skills. The most remarkable idea is that, if there is an order to determine the progression of a student when using these units, then the results will be successful. By using grammatical constructions, Roles, Situations and some real life outcomes, teachers would be able to determine the progression of the students in a better way. Also, we can sub-divide the skills by modules; it means that it would be easier to evaluate the progress of the learner and it would also be easier for the learner to accomplish the course. “A good language course not only develops the learners’ control of the language but also puts the learners in contact with ideas that help the learning of language and are useful to the learners” Language curriculum design / I.S.P. Nation and John Macalister Another important content are the syllabuses, which reveals how the learner needs to center the attention on and understand the meaning of the language in order to complete the task productively. The idea is not only to help the student, but also to make more efficient our job which is to be a guide for the learners. CONCLUSION In conclusion, the core purpose of these contents is to help learners gain fluent use of a small number of very important goals and stuffing that will allow them to fill all possible needs in the future when they have to face the language in its own environment. It is also significant to emphasize that, teachers must continue looking for better tools and ideas in order to create not a good, but an almost perfect curriculum in the sense of investigating new techniques and ways of teaching English The designing of a curriculum might not be that easy, but when believing on the students and having the desire to teach, it is just a matter of time when all goals could be achieved.
